In a significant development, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the institution. On Wednesday, as Ghosh was being escorted to a Kolkata court, he faced the wrath of an irate crowd, which included protesters who verbally abused and attempted to physically assault him.
The public outrage stems from a brutal incident involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. A video from the scene shows one man attempting to slap Ghosh, reflecting the deep-seated anger over the case. The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch apprehended Ghosh based on directives from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which mandated a probe into financial misconduct at the hospital. Following his arrest, Ghosh was remanded to eight days in police custody, with the next hearing scheduled for September 10.
During Ghosh’s tenure, Dr. Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, filed multiple complaints alleging financial misdeeds. One of the more disturbing accusations involves the illicit sale of organs from unidentified bodies brought in for post-mortem examinations.
Despite resigning from RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh had subsequently been appointed as the principal of the National Medical College and Hospital, another state-run institution. However, following the shocking rape and murder incident, the West Bengal government placed him on leave.
The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor in Chest Medicine, was discovered dead in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9, sparking widespread protests. Concurrently, Sandip Ghosh is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for potential money laundering and his suspected involvement in the heinous crime.
