Majuli VDP Heroes Equip to Protect Wildlife: A Powerful Stand Against Crime – Northeast News
Guwahati: Members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) in Assam’s Majuli river island district have been equipped with essential field gear designed to protect the region’s wildlife, specifically one-horned rhinos and elephants, and combat wildlife crime. This initiative saw 62 members from 40 VDPs receiving items such as torchlights and umbrellas during an event held on Tuesday at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Majuli.
The gear distribution was generously supported by Zoo Berlin. The event was attended by Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das and Additional Superintendent of Police Bitul Chetia, both of whom conveyed their gratitude to biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak for spearheading the effort. The VDP members expressed appreciation towards Aaranyak and recounted various experiences involving encounters with stray elephants and rhinos in Majuli.
Representatives from Aaranyak, Dr. Deba Kumar Dutta, Senior Manager of Rhino Research and Conservation Division, and Dr. Jimmy Borah, Senior Manager of Legal and Advocacy Division, also graced the event. Dr. Dutta discussed strategies to mitigate conflicts between humans and wildlife by understanding animal behavior, emphasizing the role of scientific data in managing such conflicts effectively. Dr. Borah underscored the necessity of accurate information sharing for timely response to wildlife incidents.
The event concluded with a consensus among participants on the significance of a common platform for disseminating precise information to enhance response actions in wildlife cases. This initiative is seen as a vital step towards fostering community involvement in wildlife protection and ensuring the safety of Majuli’s rich biodiversity.
