The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA won a landslide in the 2026 Assam assembly elections, securing 102 of the 126 seats, while the BJP alone crossed the halfway mark with 82 seats — a first for the party in the state. The result overturned the pattern of 2016 and 2021, when the BJP needed allies to govern, and set the stage for caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to be sworn in for a second consecutive term after being unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party and being invited by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to form the government.

Beyond the numbers, the election underlined a striking shift toward personality-driven politics in Assam, with Mr. Sarma emerging as the central figure of the campaign. Though the party fought under the BJP’s national leadership and symbol, voters’ attention in many constituencies appeared closely tied to Sarma’s public persona and governance record.

Sarma ran an intense, nationwide-style campaign in Assam — he visited all 126 constituencies multiple times, held rallies and strategy meetings, and kept a high public profile. He told supporters he had studied ground realities closely and often forecast election outcomes; he recalled saying, “I gave a paper to Pabitra Margherita mentioning 102 seats much before results and it came true,” a claim that reinforced his image as politically prescient.

For party workers, Sarma’s visibility and energy injected confidence. For opponents, the campaign posed the challenge of confronting a highly centralised political operator who combines administrative control with organisational reach. Analysts and local academics noted that campaign materials repeatedly featured the chief minister’s image, signaling that the contest had become leader-centric in a way that mirrors the national BJP’s focus on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sarma’s appeal cut across urban and rural divides, with supporters citing infrastructure projects, welfare schemes and visible delivery of services as proof points. Voters described him as accessible and action-oriented; some observers said his cultivated public image — once “Himanta da,” now often called “Himanta mama” — strengthened his bond with women and other segments.

A former Congress heavyweight who joined the BJP in 2015, Sarma also played the role of strategist, claiming deep networks across party lines and suggesting he was aware of opposition manoeuvres during and after polling. He has frequently hinted at having sources in rival camps, a theme that has become part of his political narrative.

Sarma framed the mandate as a validation of governance and delivery, and he closed on a familiar refrain about popular support: “The love of the people is the only power in politics.” As Assam’s political map is redrawn, the BJP may remain the vehicle of power — but the 2026 result indicates that Himanta Biswa Sarma has become the engine driving it.
