Vice President C P Radhakrishnan to Grace Sikkim State Day on May 16
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan will attend the Sikkim State Day celebrations in Gangtok on May 16, 2026, officials confirmed. Ahead of the event, Chief Secretary R Telang chaired a review meeting to assess arrangements and coordinate preparations for the Vice President’s visit and the statehood celebrations.
At the meeting, Telang outlined logistical plans and assigned specific responsibilities to various government departments. He emphasised the need for detailed planning and strict security measures to ensure the programme proceeds smoothly and without disruption.
Senior officials from multiple departments assured the administration of full cooperation and close coordination for the successful conduct of the celebrations. Heads of departments and senior officers from several line departments were present at the review, taking part in the preparedness discussions.
Sikkim Statehood Day marks the 1975 moment when Sikkim became the 22nd state of India. Prior to statehood, Sikkim was a monarchy under the Chogyal; growing unrest and calls for democratic reforms led to a referendum in which an overwhelming majority voted to join India.
Following the referendum, the Indian Parliament passed the 36th Amendment of the Constitution, formally integrating Sikkim into the Indian Union. Authorities say the current round of reviews aims to honour that history while ensuring the upcoming State Day events run safely and efficiently.
