The Indian National Congress has formally offered support to actor-turned-politician C. Vijay and his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, the party announced on Wednesday, while attaching a clear precondition that communal forces who reject the Constitution must have no place in the alliance.
Girish Chodankar, Congress in-charge for Tamil Nadu, said Vijay approached the party for assistance after the state assembly results. The Congress described the verdict as a public mandate for a secular, progressive government and said Tamil Nadu’s younger voters have expressed a preference for Vijay’s leadership. In response, both the state legislative party and the Pradesh Congress Committee voted to give him full backing.
Congress emphasized that its support is conditional and will be maintained only if groups that do not accept the Indian Constitution are excluded from the partnership — an obvious reference to the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies, the party added. In the 234-seat assembly, Vijay’s TVK won 108 seats in its first electoral outing, leaving it ten short of the 118 needed to secure a majority.
With the Congress having contested in alliance with the DMK and winning five seats, its backing is now pivotal for Vijay to reach the majority threshold. The party said the arrangement should not be seen merely as a short-term, government-forming pact but as a longer-term partnership carrying “historic responsibility,” intended to continue through upcoming Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and local elections.
Congress compared the alliance’s aims to the legacies of K. Kamaraj, Periyar and B.R. Ambedkar on social justice and pledged joint efforts. The party stated that leader Rahul Gandhi and Vijay are both willing to work together to meet public expectations, underscoring the political and symbolic weight of the Congress endorsement in determining who will govern Tamil Nadu.
