Guwahati, May 6: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an NDA ally, on Wednesday unanimously endorsed incumbent Himanta Biswa Sarma to serve a second consecutive term as Assam chief minister, a decision taken at the AGP legislature party meeting in Guwahati as the BJP-led alliance prepares to form the new state cabinet. The state cabinet is expected to be finalised after the BJP legislature party meets around May 10 or 11.

The endorsement followed the NDA’s decisive victory in the Assembly elections and a joint AGP-BJP meeting at the AGP’s Ambari headquarters. AGP president Atul Bora told reporters the legislators “unanimously proposed” Sarma’s name, citing the developmental work carried out by his previous government. “Keeping in mind the tremendous developmental work done by Himanta Biswa Sarma as the chief minister in the last government, our legislature party unanimously proposed his name to lead the new government,” Bora said.

Bora was himself unanimously elected leader of the AGP legislature party at the meeting attended by the party’s newly elected MLAs. The meeting also expressed gratitude to the people of Assam for their support to the AGP-led NDA alliance and paid tributes to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.

The AGP finalised key assembly positions: working president Keshab Mahanta was chosen deputy leader of the legislature party, first-time MLA Tapan Das (Dimoria) was appointed legislature party secretary, and first-time Bajali MLA Dharmeswar Roy was named chief whip. Bora and Mahanta retained their Bokakhat and Kaliabor seats respectively and served as ministers in the previous NDA state government.

The BJP-led NDA won a third consecutive term in Assam, with the BJP securing 82 of 126 seats and its allies the AGP and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) winning 10 seats each. With inputs from PTI.
