Amit Shah Hails Bhabanipur Voters After Mamata Banerjee’s Defeat
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday praised voters in Bhabanipur after the constituency — long seen as a Trinamool Congress stronghold — delivered a surprise defeat for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In a post on X, Shah wrote, “Hats off to the people of Bhabanipur. Their mandate has made it clear what fate awaits an anarchic ruler,” framing the result as a rejection of what he called anarchic governance.
The Bhabanipur seat was won by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee by a margin of just over 15,000 votes. The outcome has drawn intense national attention because the constituency has been central to Banerjee’s political standing and to the broader competition between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal.
Shah’s comments underscore the BJP’s narrative that voters are turning away from confrontational or disorderly politics. By describing the verdict as a repudiation of “anarchy,” he sought to present the result as an endorsement of law, order and stable governance — themes the BJP has used consistently in its campaign in the state.
For the TMC, Bhabanipur’s loss represents a significant symbolic setback, given the seat’s association with Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and prestige. For the BJP, the victory is being positioned as momentum-building evidence of shifting public sentiment and an expanding political footprint in West Bengal.
Political analysts say each constituency in the state carries outsized political symbolism, and parties are likely to interpret the Bhabanipur outcome as indicative of larger trends in voter mood and strategy going forward.
