Delimitation Effect: 18 of 19 Congress Winners in Guwahati Are Muslim

Guwahati: The Congress will enter Assam’s new 126-member assembly with 19 lawmakers — 18 of them Muslim and only one Hindu — a result that suggests many Muslim voters favoured the national party over regional alternatives in this election. The opposition in the house will number 24 members, of whom 22 are Muslim.

Of the 19 Congress MLAs, 18 are Muslim. The wider opposition’s Muslim representation also includes two MLAs from the AIUDF and one each from the Trinamool Congress and Raijor Dal. The only two Hindu faces on the opposition bench are Akhil Gogoi, Raijor Dal president who retained Sibsagar, and Joyprakash Das of Congress, who won Naoboicha — a constituency with a substantial Muslim electorate.

Notably, all Hindu sitting Congress MLAs were defeated. Observers point to delimitation changes that have limited the number of seats where Muslim voters are a decisive factor to 22, shaping the electoral map and outcomes in several constituencies.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the results, saying: “It is very unfortunate that all but one MLA in Congress follow Islam.” He told reporters that “all Hindu candidates of Congress have lost except one,” adding, “I am not trying to say that Hindus or Muslims have won. I am only giving the data, and it is for you to analyse the data.”

Sarma, who had earlier asserted there was no conducive atmosphere in Congress for the Hindu samaj, said recruitment of former Congress leaders was part of the BJP’s strategy. “That is why we called Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Kumar Borah to the BJP. We appeal to all the good, visionary Hindu leaders in Congress to come to the BJP platform looking into the future of Assam and unitedly protect Assamese people from invasion of Bangladeshi miya,” he added.

The election outcome and the demographic composition of the opposition bench mark a notable shift in voter alignment in Assam and set up fresh challenges for party strategies and communal messaging ahead.
