Guwahati, May 4: After the fifth round of counting on Monday, Congress state president and candidate Gaurav Gogoi trailed BJP rival Hitendra Nath Goswami in the high-profile Jorhat Assembly constituency, according to official trends. The BJP had 23,339 votes to the Congress’s 15,326, leaving Goswami with a lead of 8,013 votes as counting continued.

The growing margin is being viewed as an early setback for the Congress in a key seat, with party strategists watching subsequent rounds for any reversal. Counting of votes is progressing across Assam under tight security, and officials said clearer trends were expected later in the day.

In the early rounds of tabulation, the BJP-led NDA was reported to be leading in 98 Assembly seats while the Congress-led opposition alliance held leads in 25 constituencies, indicating a strong early showing for the ruling coalition in the state.

Polling for the Assembly elections took place on April 9, with an impressive voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate of more than 2.50 crore. A total of 722 candidates contested the polls, including 59 women.

The Congress fielded the most candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90. Other parties in the fray included the All India United Democratic Front (30 seats), Asom Gana Parishad (26), Bodo Peoples’ Front (11), Raijor Dal (13), Assam Jatiya Parishad (10), CPI(M) (3), and All Party Hill Leaders Conference (2). The Aam Aadmi Party and United People’s Party Liberal each contested 18 seats, the Trinamool Congress 22, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha 16, and there were 258 Independent candidates.
