Live Bengal Election Results: TMC vs BJP — Counting Begins Now
Monday, May 4 is a decisive day for state politics as vote counting begins in West Bengal and Assam, with results also declared simultaneously for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. The outcome will determine whether the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) retains power in West Bengal for a fourth term or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) breaks new ground in a state where it has never formed government; in Assam the contest is mainly between the incumbent BJP and the Congress.
West Bengal has attracted intense scrutiny after most exit polls signalled an advantage for the BJP. Matrize projected the BJP at 146–161 seats and the TMC at 125–140 in the 294-member assembly; Chanakya Strategies put the BJP at 150–160 and the TMC at 130–140. By contrast, Peoples Pulse forecast a TMC landslide of 178–189 seats with the BJP at 95–110. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rejected those projections, asserting her party would win “more than 226 seats” and alleging the exit polls were aired at the “instructions of the BJP” to demoralise TMC workers. Banerjee is personally contesting the high-stakes Bhabanipur seat against BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.
Voting in West Bengal took place in two phases, on April 23 and April 29, recording exceptionally high turnout both times — 89.93 percent in the first phase and 89.99 percent in the second. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the turnout, saying voting was taking place in a “fearless environment”, unlike what had been the situation over the past six to seven decades.
In Assam, most pollsters predicted a comfortable BJP majority, estimating 87–99 seats in the 126-seat assembly while forecasting 21–32 seats for the Congress. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence the BJP would form the government, saying the party’s prospects were “100 per cent confirmed.” The Election Commission reported Assam’s highest-ever turnout at 85.38 percent, beating the previous record of 84.67 percent in 2016; provisional data showed women’s turnout at 85.96 percent, men at 84.80 percent and third-gender voters at 36.84 percent. Voting across Assam was held in a single phase on March 16.
Live counting coverage begins from 6 AM on May 4; results from these states will shape regional political dynamics and have wider implications for national politics.
