Agartala, 2 May 2026 — The Pradesh Congress staged a protest march across Agartala this evening to denounce a steep rise in gas prices, saying the increases are placing heavy financial strain on households and businesses. Party workers marched from the Congress headquarters near Post Office Chowmuhani through several city areas, carrying empty cylinders on their shoulders in a bid to dramatize the impact on ordinary families.
Prabir Chakraborty, the Pradesh Congress spokesperson who led the demonstration, said frequent hikes in cylinder prices have left “ordinary people gasping for relief.” Protesters carried banners condemning the “unprecedented price hike” and accused both the central and state governments of pushing citizens into economic distress.
The rally highlighted a recent sharp increase in commercial LPG rates — a rise of Rs 994 that pushed the price to Rs 3,581.50 from Rs 2,587.50, the protesters noted. In a symbolic gesture underscoring the severity of the crisis, several party workers carried cylinders “as if being taken to a crematorium,” drawing strong visual attention to the issue.
Local traders, already under pressure, expressed dismay at the sudden escalation and many reportedly approached gas agencies in desperation. Some attendees blamed global conflicts for the spike in rates, while others alleged the government used the post-election period in several states to pass on the burden to consumers.
The Pradesh Congress vowed to continue mobilising resistance against what it called “anti-people policies” that are worsening the economic situation across Tripura, and said it would press for relief measures and greater transparency on price-setting.
