An 18-year-old youth from Assam’s Cachar district was among seven people killed when an old boundary wall collapsed in Bengaluru’s Shivajinagar area during strong winds and heavy rain on April 29. The deceased has been identified as Akhtar Hussain Laskar, also known as Naseem, a resident of Rupaibali village under Shibpur Gram Panchayat in Sonai, Cachar district.

According to reports, Akhtar was returning home from work amid heavy rainfall when he and several other pedestrians took shelter under a temporary roadside structure. At that time, the ageing boundary wall of a nearby hospital gave way under the impact of strong winds, crushing those who had sought refuge. Akhtar and six others, including a child, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members said Akhtar had moved to Bengaluru at a young age to earn a living and was the sole breadwinner for his household. He had been supporting his family financially while also helping to care for his father, who is reportedly battling cancer. News of his death has deeply affected relatives and residents of Rupaibali village, where mourners gathered to grieve.

Local sources said that after legal formalities are completed, Akhtar’s body is expected to be flown to Silchar on May 1 for the last rites. Authorities are investigating the incident; the collapse highlights concerns about the condition of older structures and the risks posed by severe weather to pedestrians and makeshift shelters.
