EAM Jaishankar’s Critical Talks with Iran on Ceasefire, Bilateral Ties

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on the evening of Wednesday, April 29, 2026, discussing developments related to the ceasefire, bilateral relations and wider regional and international issues. Posting on X, Jaishankar said they had “a detailed conversation” and added, “We agreed to remain in close touch.”

Iran’s mission in India also posted on X that the two ministers exchanged views on the latest ceasefire developments, bilateral ties and broader regional and international concerns, reflecting parallel accounts from both sides about the substance of the call.

The conversation follows earlier diplomatic contacts in April: Jaishankar and Araghchi, together with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, had discussed the situation in early April, and Jaishankar later spoke with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Officials say the talks have repeatedly raised the conflict’s likely impact on global supplies and trade routes.

The call came amid heightened regional tensions after US President Donald Trump renewed threats toward Iran and reports that the Strait of Hormuz had been blocked, a development that has raised strategic and energy-security concerns for India and other states dependent on Gulf shipping lanes.

The exchanges underline India’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with key Gulf partners and Iran as New Delhi monitors developments that could affect energy imports and regional stability. Both sides signalled their intent to stay in close contact as the situation evolves.
