Complaint Sparks Probe into Dhubri Content Creator’s Provocative Video
A formal complaint has been lodged with police against social media content creator Bhaskarr Dutta for allegedly circulating “communally provocative” and defamatory material aimed at residents of Dhubri and the wider Lower Assam region. The complaint, filed by social worker Shimul Sarkar before Debashish Bora, asks authorities to take immediate legal action against the individual operating a Facebook page under the name “Bhaskarr Dutta.”
According to the petition, the dispute centers on a recently circulated Facebook video in which the creator allegedly misrepresented local geography to promote a misleading narrative. Sarkar claimed the video showed a char (river island) visible from Netai Dhubuni Ghat in Dhubri and falsely portrayed that land as part of Bangladesh, thereby identifying Indian territory as foreign land.
The complainant said the visuals and accompanying commentary were used intentionally to spread misinformation, creating panic, bias and negative perceptions about the people of Dhubri and Lower Assam. Sarkar further alleged that the content contained statements capable of inciting social tension and sowing divisions between communities.
In his petition, Sarkar described the material as “deliberate misinformation” that he said amounted not only to defamation of individuals but also to an attack on the dignity and image of the region. “Such content is capable of creating widespread social stigma and public misunderstanding toward our people,” he reportedly stated, adding that falsely portraying local land as foreign territory could disturb peace and communal harmony in the sensitive border district.
The social worker urged Dhubri police to register cases under relevant provisions related to defamation, the spread of misinformation, and promotion of enmity between different groups. Police sources confirmed that the complaint has been received and said an inquiry into the video’s content and its source is expected to follow.
The incident has also prompted local debate over the growing influence of digital content creators and concerns about the use of regional stereotypes and misleading narratives for social media engagement.
