Heart-Wrenching Ordeal: Aroonim Bhuyan Shares the Harrowing Experience of His Father, Dr. Kalyan Bhuyan, During the IC814 Hijacking
Dr. Kalyan Bhuyan, an esteemed microbiologist and former head of the Department of Pathology at Kathmandu Medical College, from Jorhat, Assam, was a passenger on the ill-fated Indian Airlines Flight IC814 hijacked in December 1999. His son, Aroonim Bhuyan, shared his family’s harrowing experience in an interview with India Today NE.
Aroonim recounted that his father was traveling from Kathmandu to Delhi for a family celebration when the flight was hijacked. Initially, he thought a delay was typical until his uncle informed him of the hijacking, plunging them into an anxious wait for updates. During the hijacking, Dr. Bhuyan and other passengers were subjected to severe discomfort, with conditions deteriorating as the plane was diverted to Amritsar, Dubai, and finally Kandahar. Despite the severe circumstances, Dr. Bhuyan remained composed, drawing on his disciplined life and microbiology background to manage stress and support other passengers.
When Dr. Bhuyan returned home, his family felt a mix of relief and lingering trauma. He continued his professional life, retiring in 2008, and remained dedicated to his field until his death in 2011. A recent web series on the hijacking rekindled memories for Aroonim, who felt the portrayal was mixed with both accurate and dramatized elements but appreciated the discussions it spurred.
Reflecting on his father’s legacy, Aroonim emphasized Dr. Bhuyan’s resilience and dedication. The ordeal profoundly shifted Aroonim’s perspective on life and underscored the importance of composure in adversity. He admired his father’s ability to remain focused during tumultuous times and his unwavering commitment to microbiology. Dr. Bhuyan’s story, embodying strength and perseverance, continues to inspire those who knew him and those who learn of his remarkable journey.
