Relentless Downpour Batters Northern Hyderabad, Leaving Residents in Peril Late Tuesday Night
Heavy Rains Pummel Parts of Hyderabad, Triggering Flood Alerts
Late Tuesday night, September 3, 2024, heavy rains lashed the northern and eastern sectors of Hyderabad, significantly impacting areas such as Alwal, Nacharam, Mallapur, Quthbullapur, Balanagar, and Patancheru. Residents witnessed intense downpours accompanied by thunder and lightning, leading to substantial waterlogging and flash floods in locations like Miyapur and Alwal.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) swiftly initiated measures to clear water stagnation points amidst the inundated zones. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) indicated a marked surge in rainfall across various GHMC regions. Initial measurements at 11 p.m. recorded 11 mm of rain, but figures rapidly escalated, with Jeedimetla bearing the brunt at 43.3 mm. Other severely affected areas included Kapra (42.8 mm), Kushaiguda (40.8 mm), Gajularamaram (39 mm), Malkajgiri (37.3 mm), Mettuguda (36 mm), Alwal (35 mm), West Marredpally (33.5 mm), and Quthbullapur (32.5 mm).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) subsequently issued an orange alert at midnight for Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and adjacent regions, urging residents to remain vigilant for the ensuing three hours. This alert underscores the need for immediate caution due to potential extreme weather conditions.
As the city grapples with these sudden torrential rains, officials are working round-the-clock to mitigate the impact, ensuring that drainage systems function efficiently and public safety is maintained.
