PM Modi Condemns US Shooting; Expresses Relief Trump Safe

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he was relieved that US President Donald Trump, the First Lady and the Vice President were safe following a security incident in Washington, D.C. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on April 26, 2026, Modi wrote he was “relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed,” and extended his best wishes for their continued safety and well‑being.

Modi strongly condemned the violence and stressed the need to uphold democratic values. “Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned,” he wrote, sending a clear message against attacks on public events and leaders.

His remarks came after reports that a suspect attempted to breach security at a Washington venue but was quickly stopped by law enforcement. Earlier accounts said shots were fired in the area of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting rapid action by Secret Service agents who leapt onto the dais and escorted the President away. Videos circulating online showed guests taking cover after a loud noise; neither the President nor the Vice President was injured.

Authorities say the suspect was intercepted before causing large‑scale harm, but the incident has renewed questions about protection at high‑profile gatherings and the ability of security services to respond to sudden threats.

World leaders and officials also condemned the episode. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called political violence “absolutely unacceptable” and said he was glad the President and other guests were safe. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the shooting as “disturbing,” expressed shock, and offered his thoughts and prayers for those involved.

The incident drew swift international attention as governments and security officials assess the circumstances. First published April 26, 2026, 10:00 IST.
