Assam Jail Break: Prisoner Escapes Sribhumi — Security Lapses Probed
An inmate identified as Sharif Uddin escaped from Sribhumi District Jail on Tuesday, April 21, officials confirmed. Uddin, a resident of Patharkandi in Sribhumi district, reportedly fled while he was engaged in assigned work outside the prison premises.
Sources said the escape occurred near a pond located just outside the jail complex, where Uddin had been taken for work-related duties. He slipped away from the work site and was not in custody when guards realized he was missing.
Authorities have launched a search operation to trace the absconding inmate. Local police and prison staff are reported to be combing surrounding areas and coordinating efforts to locate Uddin as quickly as possible.
The incident has prompted scrutiny of the jail’s security protocols and supervision of inmates during outside work assignments. Questions have emerged about possible lapses and whether jail officials failed to prevent the escape or were otherwise complicit.
Investigations into the circumstances of the escape are ongoing. Officials say they are reviewing procedures for inmate labor outside the facility and will take action based on the findings of the search and any subsequent inquiry.
