Encouraging Over 61% Voter Turnout in Aizawl, Mizoram Municipal Polls
More than 61 per cent of registered voters cast their ballots in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections held on Tuesday, April 21, officials said, with polling across all 19 wards passing off peacefully. An election official reported a turnout of 61.14 per cent of the 2.39 lakh electorate. Voting ran from 7 am to 5 pm, and there were no reports of law-and-order disturbances; the final turnout may be adjusted when the official tally is confirmed.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who voted at the Chawihhmun polling station, said he expected a decisive win for the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). He promised greater transparency and faster development if ZPM takes control of the civic body, and called for better coordination between the state government and municipal bodies to speed up implementation of projects. “We will win a landslide victory, securing at least 16 or all the seats,” he said.
The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), which won the AMC polls in 2015 and 2021, is seeking a third consecutive term. MNF president Zoramthanga, after voting at Ramhlun Venglai, said his party’s track record of governance should help it retain power and accused the ruling ZPM of losing public confidence, adding that MNF has fielded stronger candidates this time.
A total of 68 candidates are contesting the civic polls, including 28 women. ZPM, MNF and the Indian National Congress have fielded 19 candidates each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded 11. Counting of votes is scheduled for April 27.
