Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on April 20 in Jaipur accused the opposition of turning April 17 — a day he said was meant to be historic for the passage of an amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women’s Reservation Bill) — into what he called a “dark chapter” for the nation’s women. Addressing a large crowd as he flagged off the Mahila Jan Akrosh Yatra, Sharma said women across the country “would not forgive the opposition” and expressed confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would ensure “half of the population” receives its rightful entitlements.
Sharma told the rally that the BJP introduced the amendment in Parliament to strengthen women’s participation in policymaking, and accused the Congress, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party of working together, driven by a “dynastic mindset,” to block the bill’s passage. He warned the opposition would face public backlash for what he characterized as an attempt to undermine women’s rights and aspirations.
The chief minister also criticized the Congress for historically opposing several major national measures, saying the party had resisted the abrogation of Article 370 and the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code. He further alleged that Congress leaders had questioned the armed forces’ actions during “Operation Sindoor,” remarks he made while outlining his party’s broader criticisms of the opposition.
Highlighting the central government’s efforts on women’s welfare since 2014, Sharma cited schemes such as Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, Ujjwala Yojana, Lakhpati Didi and the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana as steps taken to empower women and improve their participation in public life. He stressed that Rajasthan’s and India’s development visions cannot be achieved without active female leadership and policymaking.
Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, who also spoke at the event, called the opposition’s stance “shameful” and said ordinary women had been denied opportunities by those who opposed the bill. “Such an insult to women will not be tolerated,” she said, adding that the rally would deliver “a resounding retort” to parties she described as anti-women.
The march included BJP leaders and workers, among them Minister of State Manju Baghmar, MP Manju Sharma and BJP Mahila Morcha State President Rakhi Rathore, along with a large number of women participants.
