Guarding Our Greens: Join the National Seminar at CPCRI Kayamkulam to Combat Biosecurity Threats in Horticultural Crops!

The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) is gearing up to host a significant national seminar focused on “Biosecurity Threats and Management in Horticultural Crops” from April 22 to 24, 2026, at its Regional Station in Kayamkulam, Kerala. This three-day event aims to enhance awareness among the scientific community about the pressing challenges posed by invasive plants, pests, and diseases affecting horticultural crops.

As agriculture faces increasing threats from climate change and globalization, understanding biosecurity is more crucial than ever. The seminar will feature three technical sessions designed to address the latest research and strategies in pest management and plant protection. Additionally, a hands-on workshop will provide participants with practical insights into effective biosecurity measures, ensuring that attendees leave with actionable knowledge.

Notable participants include prominent figures in the agricultural sector, such as S.K. Singh, Deputy Director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and J.P. Singh, Plant Protection Adviser to the Government of India. The event will also see contributions from esteemed experts like N.K. Krishna Kumar, former Deputy Director General of ICAR, and George V. Thomas, former Director of CPCRI. T.P. Rajendran, former Assistant Director General of ICAR, along with K.B. Hebbar, current Director of CPCRI, will round out the roster of key speakers, ensuring a wealth of expertise will be shared.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to interact with seasoned professionals, facilitating networking and collaboration in the field of horticultural biosecurity. With the increasing incidence of crop diseases and pest invasions, the emphasis on protective measures is both timely and essential for sustaining agricultural productivity.

The expertise shared during the seminar is expected to help shape future research directions and phytosanitary policies. Invasive species pose a significant threat not only to crop yield but also to biodiversity and ecosystem health. By pooling knowledge and discussing strategies, the seminar aims to create a collective approach to manage these challenges effectively.

In addition to the technical discussions, the workshop will encourage attendee engagement through hands-on exercises, demonstrating practical applications of the concepts discussed. This collaborative learning environment is designed to empower participants to implement biosecurity protocols in their own practices.

As agricultural sectors worldwide confront the looming specter of biosecurity threats, initiatives like this seminar play a critical role in fostering resilience within the horticultural community. By promoting awareness and providing actionable insights, the CPCRI-driven event aspires to equip the next generation of agricultural scientists and practitioners.

In summary, the upcoming seminar at the CPCRI Regional Station is poised to be a pivotal gathering for agricultural experts committed to safeguarding horticultural crops against biosecurity threats. Through informed discussions and a collaborative spirit, the event aims to drive forward the agenda of research, management, and protection in the face of growing challenges within the sector.
