Former first-class cricketer Kiran Powar has been appointed head coach of Assam’s men’s team for the 2026–27 domestic season, marking his first independent stint in charge of a senior side. The 50-year-old joins Assam with a blend of playing experience and junior-level coaching credentials as the state looks to bolster its domestic prospects.

Powar represented Mumbai, Baroda and Assam during his playing career and accumulated nearly 3,500 runs across 71 senior matches in first-class and List A cricket. His record as a player gives him a broad knowledge of India’s domestic circuit and the challenges of developing consistent performers.

On the coaching front, Powar led Mumbai’s U-23 team last season, bringing experience in nurturing young talent. He is also the elder brother of former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar, a connection that underlines his long involvement in the game at multiple levels.

Confirming his appointment, Powar told reporters, “I am delighted to be appointed as Assam Ranji team coach. Really looking forward towards working with them.” He said his decision was influenced by discussions with the Assam Cricket Association during a previous visit, adding he had been “really impressed with their vision” when he travelled with the Mumbai U-23 side for the CK Nayudu Trophy.

Powar expressed gratitude to the Mumbai Cricket Association and its president Ajinkya Naik, saying, “My sincere thanks to MCA and its president Ajinkya Naik, who backed me when lot of people were against me,” and that he was leaving Mumbai “with a heavy heart.” He added, “Whatever I am today in life it is because of Mumbai Cricket,” as he begins this new chapter with Assam.
