Urgent: UNC Calls 72-Hour Shutdown in Manipur’s Naga Areas
Imphal, April 19 — The United Naga Council (UNC) on Sunday announced a three-day total shutdown across all Naga areas in Manipur from midnight April 20 to midnight April 23 to protest the killing of two Naga civilians in Ukhrul district, calling the incident “barbaric” and “premeditated.”
The council said the bandh will suspend all public and private institutions, business establishments and vehicular movement across Naga areas, with the sole exception of emergency services. Citizens were urged to observe the shutdown fully.
The decision was taken at a Joint Emergency Meeting held at the UNC office in Tahamzam (Senapati headquarters), attended by the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU) and various district apex bodies, the council said.
Condemning the killings at TM-Kasom village along National Highway-202, the UNC said the two civilians were attacked by suspected militants and alleged Kuki militants were responsible. The council described the ambush as “a grave assault on the dignity, safety, and territorial integrity of the Naga people.”
The UNC also voiced serious concern over the State Government’s handling of security in Naga areas, questioning its “seriousness and sincerity” in maintaining law and order. The council noted the incident occurred shortly after visits by the Chief Minister and Home Minister to Ukhrul and said they must be held morally responsible for the deteriorating security situation.
A candlelight vigil has been called for April 23 at 6:30 pm across Naga district headquarters and in Imphal to honour the victims. The council appealed to all Naga citizens, organisations and institutions to cooperate in observing the shutdown and other resolutions.
During the mourning period, the UNC declared that Nagas in Manipur would suspend all social and economic ties with the Kukis in accordance with customary practices.
