বিহুৰ আনন্দত আকস্মিক দুৰ্ঘটনা: তীব্ৰবেগী গাড়ীৰ খুন্দাত দুজন যুৱকৰ মৃত্যু
Two young men were killed after being struck by a speeding vehicle late on Friday night in Lajum village in the Kakpathar area of Upper Assam, triggering outrage and a highway blockade the following morning. The victims have been identified as Pranjit Das of Kakpathar and Shashank Moran of Teji village, local sources and eyewitnesses said.
According to witnesses, the two were sitting on a motorcycle parked at the roadside when a fast-moving Bolero, bearing registration AS-01 V 0399, hit them. Both sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival. Community members said Pranjit Das was an emerging goalkeeper at the Kakpathar Football Coaching Centre.
Dumduma police have seized the Bolero and arrested the driver, and an investigation is underway. Preliminary inquiries by police suggest the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, officials said, though formal charges and forensic results are still pending.
The incident sparked intense anger among residents, many of whom staged a protest in the early hours of Saturday by blocking National Highway 15 near the Kakpathar police station. Protesters set tyres on fire and demanded strict punishment for the accused as well as adequate compensation for the families of the deceased. The blockade left thousands of vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway and brought traffic to a standstill.
Local administration and police officials engaged with demonstrators in attempts to defuse the situation and restore normal traffic flow, but as of the latest reports the highway remained heavily congested while talks continued. Authorities said they would press ahead with the investigation and urged calm as the legal process proceeds.
