Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana on April 13 expressed confidence that the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) will win a landslide in the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, saying the party is poised to sweep the 19-member civic body. Polling for the AMC is scheduled for April 21, with vote counting set for April 27.
Speaking at a function at the ZPM office in Aizawl, Vanlalthlana said the party aims to replicate its recent success in the Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) elections by winning all seats in the AMC. He attributed the expected support to visible development work and growing public backing for the ruling party.
“We are fortunate to have many people without political bias who desire progress. Many are coming out in support of the ZPM because they see the positive initiatives and progress,” Vanlalthlana said, stressing that development-focused messaging is drawing voters beyond traditional party lines.
The minister also launched a sharp attack on the main opposition, the Mizo National Front (MNF), accusing it of leaving behind “a legacy of poor-quality projects” during its tenure. He criticised the MNF for projecting itself as patriotic ahead of elections despite, he alleged, failing to provide basic necessities when it governed the state. “It is strange to see them act like patriots before elections when they failed to provide basic necessities during their tenure,” he added.
Vanlalthlana highlighted the ZPM’s grassroots campaign strategy as a key differentiator, contrasting it with what he described as other parties’ “outdated and aggressive tactics.” He said the ruling party’s emphasis on local engagement and development will be decisive in the civic polls.
Observers view the AMC elections as an important barometer of political sentiment in Mizoram following the ZPM’s rise to power in the state, with results likely to be read as an indicator of the party’s continuing public mandate.
