The death toll in a road crash near Kalyan rose to 11 on April 13 after two more victims died in hospital, officials said. The collision occurred at about 11 a.m. on the Rayta Bridge along the Kalyan–Murbad road when a car travelling from Kalyan struck a heavy vehicle — variously described as a dumper or a mixer truck — in a head-on collision.

Police and local rescue teams said 12 people were travelling in the car at the time. Eight died at the scene, one was pronounced dead at hospital earlier, and two others later succumbed to injuries, bringing the total fatalities to 11. The injured remain admitted to a nearby hospital and are receiving treatment. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations, officials added.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief and condolences on X, calling the crash “extremely tragic” and paying “heartfelt tribute” to the victims, saying the state was in touch with the local administration. Earlier, Thane Superintendent of Police D.S. Swami had confirmed nine casualties.

Titwala Deputy SP Anil Laad told reporters that identification of the deceased is under way, the injured are being treated, and a police case has been registered. He said the role of concerned government departments in the incident will be scrutinised and that an investigation into the circumstances has been launched.

Preliminary inquiries suggest excessive speed or loss of control may have caused the mishap. The collision also triggered a major traffic jam on the Titwala–Kalyan stretch of the highway near Rayta Bridge, disrupting vehicular movement for several hours as rescue and relief operations were carried out.

Further details are awaited as police continue their probe and authorities complete formal identification and post-mortem procedures. (IANS)
