High Voter Turnout Signals NDA Triumph in Assam, Claims Atul Bora
Following polling in the high-stakes 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora said the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is poised for a decisive win and predicted the coalition would secure around 90 of the 126 Assembly seats. Assam recorded a reportedly record turnout on April 9, with official estimates placing participation at about 85.38 per cent — higher than the 82.04 per cent seen in 2021 — and the counting of votes for 722 candidates is scheduled for May 4, 2026.
Speaking to reporters in Golaghat, Bora hailed the turnout as proof of robust democratic engagement and projected gains for both the AGP and the BJP. “Democracy is strong in Assam; that’s why so many people have voted. AGP’s seats will also increase, and BJP’s seats will also increase. NDA should get around 90 seats,” he said.
The NDA contested the election on a defined seat-sharing pact, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contesting about 89 seats, the AGP fielding candidates in 26 seats as the principal regional ally, and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) contesting 11 seats, largely in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Opinion on the high turnout was divided. Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi described the unprecedented participation as a sign of a “vote for change,” while Bora and other NDA leaders argued it reflects a pro-incumbency wave driven by the state government’s development initiatives.
Echoing the NDA’s reading, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma characterised the election as more than a political contest, calling it a “movement” to protect Assam’s culture, identity and land. He pointed to several polling booths where turnout reportedly exceeded 95 per cent, calling the exercise a historic democratic moment.
With polling complete, Assam now awaits the May 4 count, when the distribution of 126 Assembly seats will determine whether the NDA’s projected gains translate into a new mandate.
