New architectural plans for President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C. have been unveiled, sparking controversy. The renderings, distributed by Harrison Design to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts before its upcoming April 16 meeting, depict a grand structure featuring a gilded Lady Liberty statue atop the arch, with the phrase “One Nation Under God” prominently displayed. The design includes four golden lions at its base and is intended to soar more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial.
The arch is set to be built in Memorial Circle, situated near Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, as part of festivities commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this summer. Trump has previously touted the arch as “the most beautiful in the world,” expressing confidence in its potential to be a lasting symbol for Americans.
“I am pleased to announce that TODAY my Administration officially filed the presentation and plans to the highly respected Commission of Fine Arts for what will be the GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Triumphal Arch, anywhere in the World,” Trump stated. He emphasized that the project would be a significant addition to the Washington, D.C. landscape, meant for future generations to enjoy.
The plans represent the first official submission from the Trump Administration regarding the arch, a long-discussed idea Trump claims has been in the pipeline for over 200 years. During a February press briefing, he noted, “Close to 57 cities around the world have triumphal arches, and Washington, DC — the only major city — still doesn’t.” He also contrasted the proposed arch with the India Gate in New Delhi, asserting, “Ours will be the greatest of them all!”
However, the proposal has met with fierce opposition. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) criticized the project in a social media post, describing it as a “taxpayer-funded vanity project” that could disrupt traffic and obstruct views of sacred memorials. Beyer added that the project is more about “Donald Trump’s ego— and we’re going to stop it.” His anger reflects broader concerns about the monument’s potential to overshadow Arlington Cemetery, where many veterans are interred, including Beyer’s own family members.
The Commission of Fine Arts, which is set to evaluate the proposal, includes several members closely aligned with Trump. In a previous meeting, they approved a substantial $400 million renovation of the White House ballroom, a project met with legal challenges.
Meanwhile, a federal judge in D.C. has blocked the ballroom renovation for now, citing insufficient legal authority for Trump to proceed without Congressional approval. Concerns about the arch extend to its funding; it is reported that the Trump administration aims to finance the project with taxpayer dollars, allocating $2 million from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ fiscal 2026 budget, alongside $13 million in matching funds.
Opposition to the arch has also manifested in legal action. In February, a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court by Vietnam War veterans and a historian, who argue that the structure would obstruct critical views between the Vietnam War Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial from Arlington Cemetery. Recent reports indicate that Judge Tanya Chutkan declined to impose a preliminary injunction to halt the project, leaving the future of the arch uncertain.
As the debate unfolds, the proposed triumphal arch remains a focal point of contention, illuminating the intersection of national pride, historical memory, and the complexities of modern political architecture.
