Urgent: Sikkim’s Bold Move to Combat Glacial Lake Outburst Floods with New Regional Centre for Glaciology
On July 12, the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, convened a crucial meeting to address the increasing threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The session, attended by Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba and a team of scientists, emphasized the urgent need for establishing a Regional Centre for Glaciology in Sikkim.
The meeting was spearheaded by Sandeep Tambe, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, who elaborated on the severe issue of glacial outburst-induced flash floods in Sikkim. A particular focus was given to the recent South Lhonak Lake outburst, which occurred during the night of October 3 and 4, 2023, causing significant destruction.
Present at the meeting was a scientific team specializing in the study of glaciers and glacial lakes, which has been monitoring South Lhonak Lake for several years using field visits and satellite imagery. Their research highlights the expansion of this glacial lake due to factors such as climate change, avalanches, landslides, and earthquake-induced silting.
The proposed Regional Centre for Glaciology is deemed essential for continuing research into glaciers and glacial lakes, understanding the associated risks, and devising preventative measures using advanced technologies and targeted funding.
MP Indra Hang Subba assured participants that he would escalate the issue of GLOFs to the national level, emphasizing its significance not only for the Himalayan region but for the entire nation in the context of natural disasters and water security. He expressed his confidence in the Department of Science and Technology to conduct thorough studies and present their findings to lawmakers, enabling the formulation of effective solutions and policy interventions.
The meeting showcased a robust commitment to combating the threats posed by glacial lake outburst floods through scientific research, collaborative efforts, and proactive measures aimed at safeguarding the region and its inhabitants.
