Three NPP Workers Hurt in Alleged BJP Attack After Dima Hasao Polls
Three volunteers of the National People’s Party (NPP) were seriously injured after being allegedly attacked by workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Dima Hasao district, Assam, on April 9, hours after polling ended in the hill district, the party said in an FIR. NPP candidate Daniel Langthasa lodged the complaint and called for immediate registration of the case and protection for party workers.
The attack, the FIR states, occurred at around 7:30 pm on April 9 in Warigiding village, Langting, as the volunteers — Monendra Haflongbar, Janarjit Naiding and Jeetujit Thaosen — were returning from Gangdangbra Polling Station after casting their votes. According to the complaint, three local residents were named as accused: Dolin Ardao, Deep Ardao and Putom Ardao.
The FIR alleges the accused assaulted the NPP workers with iron rods, hammers and sharp knives and also damaged their vehicle. The injured were initially taken to Langting Hospital; due to worsening condition they were referred in the early hours of Friday, April 10, to Haflong Civil Hospital. One of the three, described as critical in the FIR, was later transferred to Guwahati for advanced treatment.
Langthasa filed a formal complaint at Haflong Sadar Police Station on the night of April 10, demanding swift legal action and police protection for his supporters. He said a mobile phone recovered from one of the persons of interest has been handed to Langting Police Station to aid the investigation.
Speaking to reporters, Langthasa said he had witnessed election-related violence in West Bengal and Tripura but had not expected similar incidents in Dima Hasao. “Such trends had never been seen in Dima Hasao district before,” he said, adding the attack was a consequence of the BJP “sensing electoral defeat” and acting out of frustration. He also claimed BJP workers had been intimidating NPP volunteers during the campaign and said he personally intervened to stop any retaliation by his supporters.
Police have not made any arrests so far. The incident has cast a shadow over what authorities had described as a largely peaceful polling day in the district.
