Historic 80.38% Voter Turnout in Doomdooma: What It Means

Voting in the Assam Legislative Assembly election for the 82 No. Doomdooma constituency concluded largely peacefully on Thursday, with a voter turnout of 80.38 percent recorded up to 5 pm, election officials said. The poll took place across the Doomdooma area as part of the statewide assembly elections and proceeded without major disruptions in most locations.

Despite cloudy skies and intermittent light rain, voters began queuing at polling stations well before voting opened at 7 am, though turnout was relatively low during the initial hours and increased steadily as the day progressed. First-time voters were visible at many booths, displaying notable enthusiasm and contributing to the strong midday turnout.

Overall polling was reported to be smooth across the constituency, but voting at Polling Station No. 96, located at PM Shri Hoonlal Higher Secondary School in Doomdooma town, got underway after a brief morning delay caused by a technical snag in an electronic voting machine (EVM). Officials addressed the issue and voting resumed at the station shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Durga Bhumij lodged a formal complaint with election authorities alleging that workers of the ruling BJP had threatened Congress polling agents and party workers at several stations under the Hansara Gaon Panchayat; the allegations are under inquiry by the relevant officials. The complaint underscores tensions at some local booths even as the wider polling process remained largely orderly.

The high turnout in Doomdooma — reported as 80.38 percent by 5 pm — reflects significant voter engagement in the constituency, though final figures for the full day may vary once all polling stations submit their complete returns.
