Urgent Relocation of Majestic Tiger Demanded After Tragic Orang Fatality
Forest Guard Killed by Tiger in Orang National Park, Assam: Minister Calls for Immediate Action
Udalguri: In the wake of the tragic death of forest guard Dhanmoni Deka, who was mauled by a tiger in Orang National Park, Assam Forest and Environment Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has demanded swift identification and relocation of the responsible tiger to avert further incidents.
The incident occurred on August 28 when Deka was attacked during a foot patrol in the park’s Bilpara range. Despite attempts to ward off the tiger with warning shots, the animal did not retreat, leading to Deka’s demise. His mutilated body was later discovered near Kheroni camp, about three kilometers from the original patrol site.
Sipajhar MLA Paramananda Rajbongshi voiced concerns following the incident, cautioning that the tiger might become a ‘man-eater’ and pose ongoing threats to forest guards and nearby residents. Rajbongshi urged the forest department to prioritize locating and relocating the predator, even suggesting lethal measures if necessary. Besides, he criticized the adequacy of the government’s ex-gratia payment to Deka’s family, emphasizing the need for additional humanitarian aid and social security.
Jayanta Kumar Das, a former Honorary Wildlife Warden, highlighted the necessity for better training for forest guards, particularly in overlooked regions like Orang National Park. He recommended that, if the tiger could be identified using camera traps, tranquillizing and relocating it to a zoo would be more effective than euthanizing.
In response, a dedicated team from the forest department has been assigned the task of tracking and capturing the Royal Bengal Tiger to ensure public safety.
Orang National Park, which spans the Darrang and Sonitpur districts, is home to 26 tigers, according to the latest 2022 census. The relocation of the tiger is seen as crucial to preventing further tragedies.
