Breaking: Manipur Curfew Partially Relaxed in 3 Valley Districts
District magistrates in Imphal West, Imphal East and Thoubal issued orders on April 9 partially relaxing curfew rules, allowing residents to move between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. under strict conditions while maintaining a curfew from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. the following day. The move follows a review of the prevailing law-and-order situation in the valley districts.
The limited easing comes after prohibitory orders were imposed earlier this week under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in response to tensions following the Tronglaobi incident. Authorities said the decision to permit short, regulated movement was taken after on‑ground assessments and with safeguards to ensure public safety is not compromised.
Significant restrictions remain. Public assembly of five or more persons is banned and the carrying of sticks, stones, firearms, sharp weapons or explosive materials is prohibited. In Thoubal, the orders additionally bar unauthorised gatherings of four or more people during the relaxation window.
Essential services are exempted from the curfew. Law enforcement, emergency services, banking operations and courts will continue to function. Movement for health services, utilities, accredited media personnel and air travel is also allowed during — and in some districts beyond — the designated relaxation hours.
The modified restrictions will stay in force until further notice. Officials stressed continued vigilance and enforcement to prevent any escalation of the situation.
