Massive Voter Queues in Guwahati’s Jyotikuchi as Polling Starts
A strong voter turnout was reported at a polling booth in Jyotikuchi, part of the Dispur Assembly constituency in Guwahati, with long queues forming from as early as 6:30 a.m. Voters continued to arrive steadily through the morning, reflecting robust public participation on polling day, and officials described voting at the booth as peaceful.
The Dispur constituency covers Bataghuli, Jyotikuchi, Hatigaon, Kahilipara, Dispur, Beharbari, Betkuchi, Basistha, Pathorkuchi, Khanapara, Rukminigaon and Srimantapur. Electoral rolls for the constituency list 243,176 registered voters: 117,027 male, 126,137 female and 12 voters from the third-gender category.
Contesting candidates in the constituency include Aayush Kumar Singh (Independent), Ballav Patra (Aam Aadmi Party), Mira Borthakur Goswami (Indian National Congress), Pradyut Bordoloi (Bharatiya Janata Party) and Jayanta Kumar Das (Independent).
While reports from other parts of Assam noted tight security following a night of tension, polling at the Jyotikuchi booth proceeded without disturbance, with sustained voter turnout underscoring the electorate’s engagement in the democratic process.
