Shocking Rocket Attack in Manipur’s Moirang Kills Two Children
Imphal, April 7: Two children were killed and their mother critically injured after a projectile, believed to be from a rocket launcher, struck a residential area in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, officials and hospital sources said. The explosion killed a 5-year-old boy and a 5-month-old baby girl, and the woman was rushed to Raj Medicity Hospital in serious condition; hospital authorities confirmed the children were brought in dead.
Local residents and officials said the projectile is suspected to have been fired by Kuki militants, though authorities have not yet issued an official confirmation identifying the perpetrators. The blast immediately triggered widespread outrage in Moirang, where enraged residents took to the streets to condemn the attack.
Tensions escalated as protesters set fire to two oil tankers and a goods-laden truck that were reportedly en route to Churachandpur. A large crowd also gheraoed the Moirang Police Station, burning tyres and debris outside the gate and demanding swift action against those responsible.
Security forces were deployed in large numbers around the area to restore order and prevent further violence. Officials monitoring the situation said it remained tense as authorities worked to secure the site and begin investigations.
Moirang MLA Thokchom Santi Singh, who visited the scene soon after the incident, strongly condemned the killings, calling the act “nothing less than terrorism.” He offered condolences to the bereaved family and urged law enforcement to take stringent action against those involved.
Police and other authorities said investigations are underway and further details will be released as they become available.
