Assam CM in Dispur Pledges 2 Guwahati Medical Colleges; Backs Bordoloi
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday brought the BJP’s core poll planks to centre stage in Dispur, pitching governance promises and identity messaging as he campaigned for BJP candidate Pradyut Bordoloi. Speaking at a large rally in Guwahati on April 5, Sarma highlighted new development commitments for the city while also taking aim at opponents in the ongoing local controversy over beef consumption.
Sarma strongly endorsed Bordoloi, a recent entrant from the Congress, framing his switch as a reflection of shifting political realities. “Congress today doesn’t have the atmosphere for people like him. So, it’s our responsibility to help him win,” the Chief Minister said, urging voters to back the candidate now in the BJP fold.
With the slogan “Akou Ebaar Modi Sarkar” ringing through the event, Sarma presented what he described as his government’s report card, stressing delivery and urban-focused measures alongside broader party narratives. He placed healthcare at the top of his list of promises for Guwahati.
Flagging gaps in the city’s medical infrastructure, Sarma announced that Guwahati will get two new medical colleges, taking the total to four. He said existing health centres often lack round‑the‑clock medical staff and argued the additional colleges were needed to address that shortfall. “There are health centres in every ward, but doctors are usually not there at night. Keeping the need of the people in mind, we have decided to establish two more medical colleges in the city,” he said.
On civic development, Sarma pledged targeted ward-level funding, promising that this year Rs 20 crore would be allocated to 60 wards if the BJP is re-elected, a move he framed as strengthening grassroots infrastructure and amenities. He also said the government was considering softer community measures, including music schools and internet‑enabled libraries in every ward of Guwahati.
The rally also saw Sarma wade into the beef row that has clouded the Guwahati Central constituency. Without naming individuals, he urged voters to reject candidates whose families allegedly consume beef, linking the issue to Assamese identity and social values. “Muslims WhatsApp me that they are having buffalo this Eid. At a time when indigenous Muslims have understood this, if Assamese people start doing it, will Assamese society survive? I have become Chief Minister for that reason,” he said.
Balancing development promises with identity politics, Sarma’s Dispur address underscored the BJP’s dual‑track strategy as campaigning moves into its final stretch.
