In a significant development in the investigation surrounding the blast outside the BJP headquarters in Chandigarh, Punjab Police announced the arrest of two additional suspects, bringing the total number of apprehensions in the case to seven. The arrests were confirmed by a senior police officer on Sunday.

Previously, police detained five individuals believed to be linked to the operation, including Mandeep, Rubal Chauhan, Charanjit Singh, Jasvir Singh, and Balwinder. Authorities suspect that the group is part of an Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)-backed module, reportedly receiving directives from handlers based in Germany and Portugal.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that the latest arrests, Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, took place during a coordinated operation with Haryana Police on the night of April 4 in Rewari, Haryana. Both suspects hail from the Morinda area of Rupnagar district in Punjab and were working as bike operators for Rapido.

The investigation revealed that Gurtej Singh connected with a handler based in Portugal, identified as Baljot Singh, alias Jot, approximately six months prior through social media platforms. The duo, along with Mandeep and Rubal Chauhan, acquired a cache that included two grenades, a pistol, and ten cartridges from Jasvir Singh, also known as Jassi.

According to DGP Yadav, Jot instructed Gurtej to identify targets and conduct reconnaissance. Gurtej subsequently involved Amanpreet in their plot. Reportedly, both men were promised ₹2 lakh each for executing their plan. During the incident, Amanpreet allegedly threw a grenade while Gurtej filmed the act for their foreign handlers, who had provided online training videos on grenade usage and communication via mobile phones.

As police continue to delve into the origins and supply chain of the seized consignment, they have confirmed that the blast occurred around 5 pm on April 1 outside the BJP state headquarters in Sector 37, Chandigarh. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, even though the explosion caused damage to nearby vehicles. Initial assessments suggested a crude bomb as the cause, but it was later identified as a hand grenade.

On Saturday, the DGP indicated that the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police, in conjunction with Chandigarh Police, has successfully unraveled the details surrounding the grenade attack. During their operation, law enforcement recovered a hand grenade, a .30 caliber Zigana pistol, and ammunition from the suspects.

Further investigations suggest that the network behind the attack is backed by Pakistan’s ISI and directed by foreign operatives primarily based in Europe. Assistant Inspector General of Police for the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Deepak Pareek, noted that the consignment had passed through multiple intermediaries before reaching its final recipients.

The arrested suspects have been charged under pertinent provisions of the Arms Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the SSOC police station in SAS Nagar. In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, a 10-second video surfaced online depicting one individual pulling the pin from a grenade while another recorded the action. The pair fled moments before the blast, and their actions were also captured by CCTV footage. Notably, on the same day, Sukhjinder Singh Babbar of the banned Babbar Khalsa International claimed responsibility for the act via social media, intensifying concerns over extremist violence in the region.

This latest series of arrests underscores ongoing fears regarding cross-border terrorism and its implications for domestic security in India. As investigations progress, authorities remain vigilant in tracing the routes and networks that facilitate such activities.
