A fresh political confrontation has broken out in Assam days before the state Assembly elections, with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaurav Gogoi accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of serious impropriety over allegations involving undisclosed foreign properties and passport-related issues linked to Sarma’s wife. Gogoi called the chief minister “an embarrassment for Assam and India,” and demanded answers, saying: “Serious allegations have come out. He will have to answer these questions and pay for his crime.”
The claims were first aired at a press conference by Congress leader Pawan Khera, who alleged that Sarma’s wife holds multiple passports from different countries and owns overseas properties that were not declared in official filings. Congress leaders say the matter raises questions about transparency and accountability ahead of the polls.
Sarma rejected the allegations outright, labelling them “malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies.” He accused the Congress of spreading misinformation born of “frustration and panic” as campaigning intensifies, and insisted neither he nor his wife had committed any wrongdoing. “Such desperate and baseless attacks only expose their sinking ground. I categorically reject every allegation,” he said.
The chief minister also announced that he and his wife would initiate criminal and civil defamation proceedings against Khera within 48 hours, warning that Khera “will be held fully accountable for his reckless and defamatory statements.” Sarma added that he had “complete faith in the judiciary.”
Emphasising his party’s electoral confidence, Sarma said the BJP remains focused on securing a decisive mandate of over 100 seats and maintained that the people of Assam would not be swayed by what he called “propaganda.”
The exchange comes amid intense campaigning ahead of the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
