Laura Stacey, the star forward of the Montréal Victoire, recently lit up the ice during a match against the Seattle Torrent, underscoring a transformative moment for women’s hockey. This past March, the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics culminated in a record-setting U.S.-Canada gold medal game, igniting unprecedented interest in women’s hockey. The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has strategically leveraged this momentum over the past three years to establish a sustainable league.
Jayna Hefford, executive vice president of hockey operations for the PWHL and a five-time Olympic medalist, remarked on the shift in interest. “Every Olympic year, there is a boost in excitement around the women’s game, but now it’s exponential,” Hefford explained. Despite this progress, women’s hockey leagues have historically struggled. Financial issues have plagued past leagues, unlike the WNBA, which benefits from NBA support.
The landscape changed dramatically in 2023 with the emergence of the PWHL, which is privately funded by billionaire Mark Walter, co-founder of Guggenheim Partners. Walter’s investment extends beyond hockey, as he also owns stakes in major sports franchises. By acquiring the rights to a former women’s league, he positioned the PWHL as a serious contender, enlisting tennis icon Billie Jean King for its advisory board.
Debuting its first game in January 2024, the league has made significant strides, currently featuring eight teams and attracting a dedicated fan base across North America. This season, the PWHL shattered attendance records, highlighted by a sold-out game in Seattle that drew 17,335 fans. In total, the league has seen attendance soar to 616,795 fans over 71 games, marking an impressive 20% year-over-year increase.
In February, post-Olympics merchandise sales doubled, while the league’s YouTube viewership surged by 200%. “The hard work starts now,” stated Amy Scheer, PWHL’s executive vice president of business operations. With over 75 corporate sponsors and a strategic partnership with Oak View Group to enhance its commercial prospects, the league is on a growth trajectory.
As part of its expansion strategy, the PWHL employs a “Takeover Tour” to explore new markets. Notably, the New York Sirens will host the Seattle Torrent at Madison Square Garden, a match already sold out. Similar success is expected for a future game at Boston’s TD Garden, indicating the league’s growing draw even in cities lacking PWHL teams.
Despite the excitement, challenges remain, particularly regarding player salaries and facility quality. Stacey, president of the players’ association, emphasized the need for collaboration between players and the league to maintain high standards as it expands.
The PWHL aims for profitability by 2031, with Kasten noting consistent revenue growth, although the league remains in the red for now. Discussions about adding more investors are underway, reflecting growing interest in women’s sports opportunities. “This league is a completely different entity than anything that has existed before,” Hefford remarked, underscoring the PWHL’s potential to nurture player loyalty and community connections.
Looking ahead, the league promises to harness this interest to foster new generations of fans and players. Stacey noted, “(We’ve) made it…now we need to ensure this is bigger, better, stronger moving forward.” With the sport on the brink of a breakthrough, the PWHL is poised to change the game for women’s hockey.
