Nagaland’s Inspiring Easter: Dawn Prayers, Hope & Renewal
Kohima, Apr 5: Nagaland marked Easter Sunday with prayers, sunrise services and messages of hope as churches and community leaders across the state celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The day brought large gatherings at dawn across hill towns, culminating in a sunrise service in the state capital organised by the Kohima Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship (KBPF) at Khuochiezie (Kohima Local Ground).
Easter also marked the culmination of Holy Week, following a period of special fasting and reflection by many believers from Good Friday through to Easter Sunday. Churches reported early-morning services where congregations in traditional attire joined in hymns and scripture readings.
At the KBPF sunrise service, worship began at first light with hymns including “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” and “Christ Arose,” accompanied by choir presentations and passages from the Bible. The gathering drew members from various churches across Kohima and beyond.
Delivering the Easter message, KBPF president Rev. Ruokuovilie Sachu described the resurrection as the foundation of Christian faith and “the ultimate victory over sin and death.” He urged believers to remain steadfast amid growing social, political and spiritual challenges and to practise their faith beyond church walls. Rev. Sachu stressed that Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life,” calling him the only solution to the problems faced by individuals and society.
The service concluded with prayers and a benediction, as themes of hope, redemption and new life resonated across the Christian-majority state. Extending Easter greetings, Governor Nand Kishore Yadav wished the occasion inspire hope, renewal and peace. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said the day celebrates the risen Christ and the promise of redemption and new beginnings, expressing hope it will renew faith and guide people toward peace, purpose and compassion. Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton called Easter the victory of life over death and a reminder of God’s boundless mercy, urging people to walk in love, humility and righteousness, while Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang also conveyed wishes of peace, strength and blessings to all.
