During the physical test round of the Jharkhand government’s recruitment drive for excise constables, 11 candidates tragically died at various test centres, according to police statements released on Sunday. These physical tests started on August 22 and were conducted at seven centres across Ranchi, Hazaribag, Palamu, Giridih, Sahebganj, and East Singhbhum districts.
Palamu reported the highest number of casualties with four deaths. Giridih and Hazaribag each recorded two fatalities. Additionally, one candidate died at Ranchi’s Jaguar Centre, while East Singhbhum’s Mosabani and Sahebganj centres each reported one death, stated IG (Operations) Amol V Homkar. The authorities have classified these incidents as cases of unnatural death, and investigations are currently underway.
Out of a total of 1,27,772 aspirants who participated in the physical tests up until August 30, 78,023 candidates managed to clear the examination. Homkar emphasized that all necessary arrangements, such as medical teams, medications, ambulances, mobile toilets, and drinking water, were available at all centres.
Following these tragic events, the BJP’s youth wing staged a protest against the JMM-led government at Ranchi’s Albert Ekka Chowk, blaming administrative mismanagement for the deaths.
The news of multiple fatalities during a government recruitment test has sparked significant public concern and scrutiny over the safety measures and protocols in place for such large-scale examinations. As the investigation proceeds, both officials and the public await clearer answers regarding the circumstances that led to these unfortunate incidents.
