Devastating Clash Erupts in Imphal West: Innocent Civilians and Brave Police Injured Amid Escalating Tensions

Fresh violence erupted in the outskirts of Imphal on Sunday, following a controversial statement by Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh who rejected the Kuki-Zo community’s demand for a separate administration. This flare-up resulted in the tragic death of 31-year-old Ngangbam Surbala and injuries to her 12-year-old daughter. Two policemen were also injured but are reportedly stable.
The violence began around 2:35 pm when suspected insurgents from Nakhujang village in Kangpokpi opened fire towards Kadangband in Imphal West. Locals claimed a drone dropped an explosive device on a house, causing mass panic and forcing residents to flee. These claims are under investigation by security forces, although purported visuals have spread on social media.
The incident exacerbated ongoing ethnic tensions between the Kuki and Meitei communities, who have been clashing since May. Kangpokpi, a region dominated by the Kuki tribes, contrasts sharply with the Meitei-majority Imphal West, the site of recent violent episodes. The attack has deepened divisions, with Meiteis accusing "Kuki terrorists" and Kuki supporters alleging that Meiteis started the conflict.
This violence follows a large protest by the Kuki-Zo community in response to Chief Minister Singh’s interview, where he dismissed the idea of a separate Kuki-Zo administration. Singh, under fire for allegedly inciting violence, rejected calls for intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the state government could resolve the crisis within the next 5-6 months.
The situation remains tense, and the polarized communities continue to hold their ground as efforts to quell the violence are underway.
