CoMSO Urges Swift Implementation After CM’s Crucial Support
SHILLONG, April 2, 2026 — The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) welcomed Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s public backing for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s electoral rolls but warned that verbal assurances must be matched by concrete action. CoMSO chairman Roy Kupar Synrem said the organisation expects the state government to move proactively to ensure SIR is implemented at the earliest.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with BJP state president Rikman Momin, Synrem thanked the Chief Minister for aligning with CoMSO’s position but stressed that “it is not only about making statements but also about doing what is required.” He urged the state to coordinate closely with the central government, the Election Commission of India and the Home Ministry to expedite the process.
Synrem said CoMSO will broaden its outreach to all political parties in Meghalaya, meeting representatives in person where possible and sending formal communications where direct meetings are not feasible. The organisation is seeking cross-party support on two priorities: implementation of SIR and amendment of the Scheduled Tribes (ST) Order, 1950.
During the meeting with the BJP state unit, CoMSO submitted a representation requesting support for both the SIR and changes to the ST Order. Synrem said the BJP leadership assured the delegation that they also favour early implementation and would raise the matters with the relevant authorities.
On the ST Order, Synrem voiced concern over delays in committees formed to study the issue, noting that a working group was constituted in December 2024 but has shown little visible progress. “It is a fact that the government is quick to form committees, but these committees often take years to complete their work. We have not seen any significant activity or outreach from the committee studying the ST Order,” he said.
Synrem emphasised that while CoMSO appreciates committee formation, these bodies must deliver results within defined timeframes because the matters directly affect the rights of indigenous communities in Meghalaya. “We urge the government to ensure that committees deliver results within a defined period. These are crucial issues, and delays cannot be justified,” he added.
