The Central government has approved Arunachal Pradesh’s full requirement of 950 metric tonnes (MT) of urea for April, offering immediate relief to farmers after earlier allocations fell far short of demand. The decision followed a high‑level meeting chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday in hybrid mode, during which Arunachal Pradesh’s Agriculture Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu pressed the case for an increase.
Wangsu told the conference that the state had originally been allotted only 100 MT of urea for April through IFFCO, a figure that already incorporated a carry‑over requirement of 700 MT from March caused by prior supply shortfalls. That limited allocation had strained agricultural operations across the state.
During the virtual discussion, Wangsu emphasised that Arunachal, despite being among the country’s lowest fertiliser‑consuming states, has repeatedly received less than its assessed urea requirement. He warned that the shortfall was ill‑timed as expansion of oil palm and tea cultivation has pushed up fertilizer demand in the region.
Wangsu cautioned that any disruption in urea supplies could delay plantation activities and adversely affect farm incomes, particularly for growers in the tea and oil palm sectors who are entering critical seasonal operations. He urged prompt remedial action to prevent cascading losses for farmers.
In a social media post on Thursday, Wangsu thanked the Union Agriculture Minister for the prompt approval, writing he was “DEEPLY grateful to Shivraj Singh Chouhan ji.” He said the enhanced allocation from 100 MT to the full 950 MT requirement will ensure adequate and uninterrupted fertiliser availability during the peak cropping season.
Officials in Arunachal and supply agencies will now move to ensure distribution reaches districts and growers without delay, a step Wangsu said is crucial to safeguard farmers’ interests and maintain the momentum of plantation and seasonal agriculture.
