On World Tuberculosis Day, a program under the 100 Days TB Free Meghalaya Campaign was held in Resubelpara’s Bajengdoba Block at Narongkol in North Garo Hills to raise awareness, screen communities and honour TB-free villages. The event, organised by the East Garo Hills District TB Control Society, brought together health officials, medical staff and local leaders to push early detection, treatment completion and community-led prevention measures.
North Garo Hills District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr Priya Sengse R Sangma urged residents to report symptoms early and stressed the importance of uninterrupted treatment. She called on health centres and schools to step up screening and awareness activities and highlighted government support schemes available to TB patients.
The program included outreach at schools and health centres, community mobilisation and screening drives aimed at finding undetected cases and linking patients promptly to care. Officials emphasised counselling, adherence support and the role of local health workers in ensuring patients complete their full course of treatment.
District TB Officer Dr Chrissie Pearly Sangma reinforced the campaign message with the rallying cry, “Yes! We Can End TB,” also voiced in the local language as “Oe, An·ching TB-ko gimaatna man·gen,” to encourage community participation in the elimination effort.
As part of the event, TB Mukt Village Awards were presented in Gold, Silver and Bronze categories. Eleven villages received recognition for their efforts in achieving TB-free status through sustained surveillance, community engagement and patient support.
Speakers reiterated Meghalaya’s commitment to the national goal of ending TB by 2030 and called for continued cooperation between districts, frontline health workers and the community to meet that target. Present at the program were Dr Rezia Sangma, Dr Cherubie Sangma, Dr Salmera Momin and several medical officers who supported the campaign activities on the ground.
