India’s Jewish Communities Skip Passover Amid Israel Security Advisory
Aizawl — Jews in India, including members of the Bnei Menashe communities in Mizoram and Manipur, have been advised not to celebrate Passover this year after Israeli authorities warned of possible terror attacks amid the escalating conflict in West Asia. Passover begins on April 1, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly cautioned Jews in India and other countries about security threats tied to the wider regional confrontation.
A Mizo Jewish woman, who had been on holiday in Mizoram with her family, told TOI that they were stranded in Delhi for a week while trying to return to Israel and would therefore be unable to observe the festival. “We have been advised by the IDF not to observe the festival of liberation this year due to the warning of terror attacks against the Jews in India and some other countries in view of the conflict between the Israel‑US combined forces and Iran,” she said to TOI.
The war has also disrupted planned migration of Bnei Menashe families to Israel. A community member in Aizawl said proposals to fly about 300 people from each state-Mizoram and Manipur-were originally scheduled for February but have been postponed. He said the 300 candidates had already been finalised after screening by nine Israeli rabbis and the Jewish Agency for Israel during visits to Aizawl in early December last year.
The community member added that a previous flight plan from Delhi was deferred owing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel and is now further delayed because of the West Asia conflict. The prolonged uncertainty has left families waiting to migrate unsure about their immediate future and travel plans.
The IDF advisory and the postponement of migration underscore growing security concerns for Jewish communities outside the Middle East as the conflict affects diaspora movement and religious observance.
