Union Minister George Kurian Triumphantly Boosts Flagship Programs in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills – Northeast News
AMPATI: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, George Kurian, visited Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district to evaluate the progress of various developmental schemes. Arriving at the district headquarters in Ampati, Kurian convened a meeting with district officials from several line departments at the DRDA Conference Hall, located in the DC Office.
During the meeting, Kurian delved into the implementation of flagship programs dedicated to enhancing the welfare of diverse population segments, including infants, children, and the elderly. He underlined that his visit is part of the Central government’s “Act East” policy, which focuses on inclusive and sustainable development.
Led by Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, the meeting enabled district officers to brief the Union Minister on the progress and challenges faced in implementing various welfare schemes. Key issues discussed included maximizing the programs’ impact on the local population.
Kurian, accompanied by his Personal Secretary Dr. Vijay John and Israel Ingty, Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, also toured several facilities and interacted with beneficiaries. At the Belbari Primary Health Centre, he engaged with medical officers and staff to gauge the healthcare services provided. Additionally, he visited the Monabari Anganwadi Center, participated in a sapling plantation drive, and interacted with the children and Anganwadi workers.
Further, the Minister visited the Village Organization (VO) Office in Talbari, meeting with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and beneficiaries, and commended the women SHGs for their ingenuity in creating usable products from water hyacinth plants. His tour concluded at the Batajor integrated Fish Farm, where he interacted with beneficiaries to understand the government’s initiatives’ impact on local fisheries.
Kurian’s visit exemplifies the Central government’s commitment to fostering development in the Northeast region through targeted interventions and community engagement, marking a significant step towards accelerating developmental progress in South West Garo Hills district.
