Tragic Loss: Devastating News as Israeli-American Among 6 Hostages Confirmed Dead in Gaza, Announces President Biden
U.S. President Joe Biden revealed late Saturday that Israel has recovered the bodies of six hostages in Gaza, among them Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin. Goldberg-Polin, who had been taken captive at a music festival in southern Israel on October 7, appeared in a distressing video released by Hamas in April. Biden noted that Goldberg-Polin had recently turned 23 and had dreams of traveling the world. He praised the courage and resilience of Goldberg-Polin’s parents, Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, following their meeting. “They have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and of all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions. I admire them and grieve with them more deeply than words can express,” Biden stated.
Early Sunday, the Goldberg-Polin family confirmed the tragic news of their son’s death, expressing their devastation and thanking supporters, while requesting privacy. Hersh Goldberg-Polin, originally from Berkeley, California, had lost part of his left arm during the attack. Footage released by Hamas showed him clearly under duress and missing his left hand.
The Israeli military also identified the other recovered bodies as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino. This harrowing announcement comes amid ongoing conflict that has seen over 40,691 Palestinians killed and 94,060 injured in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza since October 7, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The conflict was sparked by a Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and resulted in approximately 250 hostages being taken.
