AMD Launches Revolutionary Helios AI Systems Globally: India at the Heart of Innovation and Transformation!
AMD, a leading computer chipset manufacturer, is set to roll out its groundbreaking GPU-based high-performance computing platform, Helios, in the latter half of this year across several nations, including India. This strategic move aims to meet the soaring global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and the anticipated expansion of data center capacities by major tech firms.
Mahesh Balasubramanian, AMD’s Senior Director of Data Center GPU Product Marketing, shared with PTI that each Helios rack incorporates 72 interconnected MI455X GPU accelerators, offering an astonishing compute performance of up to 2.9 exaflops in FP4 format, which is particularly beneficial for AI applications. The anticipated deployment timeline indicates that the initial global customer installations of Helios systems are expected to commence in the latter part of 2026.
The surge in demand for graphics processing units (GPUs) has been largely driven by the increasing interest in AI technologies, positioning AMD to compete against Nvidia, which currently holds over 80% of the GPU market share and offers its Vera Rubin POD with a compute speed of 3.6 exaflops-though at a premium price.
In a bid to fortify AI development in India, AMD recently announced a collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to co-create a rack-scale AI infrastructure design leveraging the Helios platform. This partnership aligns with India’s national AI initiatives and aims to provide an AI-ready data center blueprint capable of supporting up to 200 megawatts (MW) of capacity. Both companies intend to assist hyperscalers and AI enterprises in accelerating data center construction in India.
Major industry players such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Reliance Industries, and Bharti Airtel have unveiled plans to invest nearly USD 200 billion in new data centers across the country. As AMD fosters the deployment of open architecture in data centers, it seeks to differentiate itself from competitors that promote proprietary systems.
Corporate Vice President of Global Enterprise Sales, Archana Vemulapalli, emphasized that as AI transitions from pilot projects to full-scale operations, India’s competitive edge increasingly rests on the robustness and scalability of its talent ecosystem, coupled with a growing infrastructure capable of supporting AI initiatives.
The combination of open standards and scalable architectures is expected to drive innovation in India, facilitating a swift transition from research and pilot initiatives to operational AI deployments at both enterprise and national levels. Vemulapalli noted that India boasts a vast, future-ready talent pool comprised of engineers, researchers, and developers, all supported by a strong open-source community and increasing collaboration between industry, academia, and national AI efforts.
