Electrifying Choice: Film Visionary Sundar C. Leads NDA’s Charge in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election for Madurai Central!
Film producer, director, and actor Sundar C. has officially been nominated by the Pudiya Neethi Katchi (New Justice Party) to contest from the prominent Madurai Central Assembly constituency. This nomination comes as the PNK aligns itself with the AIADMK, aiming to garner votes on the party’s auspicious ‘two leaves’ symbol.
A.C. Shanmugam, the founder of the PNK, expressed confidence that the AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, will convincingly win the Assembly elections and form the next government. He criticized the DMK for facing substantial public backlash over its performance across various sectors during its five-year tenure, claiming that the AIADMK will reclaim its former glory.
Sundar C., well-known for his roles as a producer, writer, and director in Tamil cinema, has a track record of successful films including “Anbe Sivam” and the “Aranmanai” series. Although his name has recently been floated as the director for an anticipated film with superstars Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, he later withdrew from the project.
In a recent press release, Shanmugam clarified that the PNK has been allotted two seats in the NDA coalition and will finalize the allocation of the second seat on Monday, March 30, in Chennai.
However, the allocation of the Madurai Central seat to Sundar C. has drawn some disappointment among AIADMK cadres. An AIADMK councillor from Madurai Corporation voiced concerns, stating, “Madurai Central is a prestigious seat… giving it to the ally is unfortunate.” Despite Sundar’s popularity and his wife, actor-politician Kushbu’s celebrity status, local sentiment favors a candidate with roots in the constituency. However, the councillor noted that the party base remains committed to supporting the alliance partner.
Political observers indicate that the upcoming contest will primarily hinge on the two dominant Dravidian parties: the DMK and the AIADMK. With Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, the incumbent minister, expected to contest for a third consecutive time in Madurai Central, DMK insiders are optimistic about their chances. Rajan, who has successfully secured a substantial percentage of votes in previous elections, is known for his transparency and efforts to connect with constituents, including releasing performance reports and avoiding bribery.
In the previous elections, the DMK received 42.55% of the votes in 2016 and improved that to 49.47% in 2021, with Rajan defeating his AIADMK opponent on both occasions. With nearly 30 years of corporate experience in international settings, the constituency values Rajan’s expertise and leadership.
Nonetheless, the DMK does face challenges, particularly the anti-incumbency sentiment after five years in power and ongoing intra-party disputes. Recently, Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth resigned amid controversy related to her husband’s involvement in a property tax scandal.
As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu shapes up for the upcoming elections, AIADMK functionaries remain resolute in putting aside differences to ensure a united front. Yet, the DMK maintains a strong belief in its record and accomplishments, anticipating a favorable outcome in the upcoming vote.
This political narrative is set against a backdrop of both optimism and apprehension as Tamil Nadu prepares for another significant electoral battle.
